The game of rugby league is accelerating at pace across Accra and beyond, and with that, we are trying to provide a wide range of activities that are inclusive, accessible and welcome people from all walks of life into our community. For more information on any or all of our programmes below please head to the contact us page.
Since 2019, we have offered a men's 13 a side club competition, with the introduction of Women in 2022 and Youth in 2023. Our Match Centre captures all league tables, fixtures and results which can be accessed here.
Each pre season, to prepare for the 13 A Side version of the game, we host all teams in a 9 A Side structure that allows new players to educate and adjust themselves to contact whilst allowing those with experience a refresh in preparation for the championships.
We use touch as an introductory derivative to the game in Ghana. It allows us to be inclusive for all participants wishing to take part in the game, in a safe and inclusive environment that focuses on core skills whilst highlighting the wider game rules.
Rugby League us for everyone and we will ensure if our community want to get involved, they can.
Tag is also another of our introductory focuses, allowing a further transition to the game and extension to touch.
The Origin Series was born in 2020, and now hosts our Men's, Women's and Youth programmes, whereby the best 40 players in the Championship go head to head in two squads of 20 to select the Ghana Nationl Team Leopards.
Names after our founders the Giwa-McNeils and Remond Safi, the squads go head to head in a 3 game series to allow our National team staff ample time to select the best players in the nation. You can head over to our YouTube and or socials to catch all the action between the Giwa-McNeils and the Safis.
The Presidents Cup quickly followed the birth of the Origins Series whereby the remaining players in the league who were not selected for the National team, alongside an invitation from the RLFG President to those players without Ghanaian heritage were selected to the squad of 20. The two teams then face off, those players who impress the coaching staff having another opportunity for selection in a stand alone selection game.
To ensure we give our most talented athletes the opportunity to excel and progress to the level that meets their ability. The performance pathway is a catch all structure that stretches from education, to club, to international competition.
Without match officials, our game simply does not exist. We have a dedicated group of educators and practitioners that ensure our players, volunteers and supporters are immersing themselves in an exceptional rugby league experience.
The first coach education course landed in Accra in 2012 as over 40 practitioners were up-skilled to further their knowledge of the game, bring that education into their local community. There are now over 20 qualified coaches and match officials working across the game with annual education courses and resources made available by the ERL and IRL.
Our education club link continues to embed itself across the country as we aspire to give each school and their athletes the opportunity to both engage with the federation and also be recruited into our community competition.
We have been working closely with our community to both host a beach clean up day and beach rugby league games since 2019. The day aims to raise awareness of the cleanliness of our beaches and the support needed to ensure their upkeep.
We also celebrate by hosting beach rugby league, which forms part of our whole club pathway with the ambition of recruiting players and workforce to the wider game.
